Eat Healthy on a Budget!

Welcome back broke girls! Today we are going to discuss a little bit about how to eat healthy, even though you might be a little broke.

Why does healthy food have to be expensive? Is it really expensive or am I just doing it wrong? Let’s answer some of those questions.

First of all, yes, eating healthy can add up on your bank statement quickly. However, just like anything else, it is all about prioritizing and knowing how to shop. Many people find that healthy food breaks the bank because, as a young, single person, cooking for one using fresh ingredients is not always realistic because the food will go bad before you can eat it. How frustrating!

Never fear, broke girls, for there are ways to afford that new outfit and some yummy meals without living off of ramen and marshmallows!

Do’s and Don’t’s of Healthy Eating at Home

DO aim to meal prep. By separating your meals out, not only are you portioning for yourself to avoid accidental overeating, but you are also helping future you out by making grabbing a meal super convenient!

DON’T get too fancy with it. Finding some healthy, yummy recipes that you love with not too many ingredients is key in saving money and not letting excess food go bad!

DO find someone to cook with! Your roommate, family member, friend, neighbor, or classmate doesn’t want to have to cook/shop alone either! Getting together with someone reduces the cost and makes it much more fun

DON’T ignore the food you do have! Remember when mom used to tell you that you had food at home? She was right! Skip the drive through and eat the food you’ve got!

Get Fit at Home!

Running, biking, walking, and jogging out in your community is a great way to get/stay in shape as well as getting you out in your town!

Being fit as a young, emerging adult is incredibly important, but incredibly hard to accomplish! Many young adults find themselves as broke as they will ever be in their lives- whether that is during college or as they are beginning their adult life after graduation. Unfortunately, many gyms, workout classes, diet groups, nutritionists, etc. are incredibly expensive and just not realistic for someone working a part-time job or just starting out in their career. Luckily, there is a way to get fit right in your own home, without needing to spend tons of money on a gym membership or workout equipment!

The best way to get started is to do some research. If you are into pinteresting, there is tons of awesome content, tips, and full workouts that you can do at home with no equipment or using things that you definitely have in your home, such as a chair or even a water bottle! Utilize your communities’ resources by looking into some trails near you or mapping out a route to jog, run, bike, or walk in your own neighborhood. Many parks have tons of walking and biking trails that can be very useful for someone looking to have a set route and distance in their cardio. Look into ways to work out your arms, legs, abs, back, glutes, etc. without using any sort of machines.

Home Workout Do’s and Don’t’s

-DO research your own workouts for areas you wish to target

-DO utilize the things you have already in your home! Water-bottles, desk chairs, textbooks, etc.

-DO grab a workout buddy! A sibling, parent, friend, classmate, or neighbor can be great for accountability, motivation, and it is always a great idea to go running/walking/biking with someone else rather than by yourself.

-DO make a hype playlist! The more fun you have while working out, the more likely you will be to make it a routine.

-DON’T get discouraged! Working out on your own takes lots of practice, and doing something is better than doing nothing

-DON’T get sucked into the idea that you need a personal trainer/expensive equipment to be healthy and fit!

-DON’T work the same areas every single day, make sure to switch off so you do not injure yourself!

-DON’T forget to stretch before and after your workouts and remember to take at least one rest day every week!
